Artist's Statement

My current work focuses on three important considerations in my life: fragility, light, and my personal memories/thoughts. I’m combining these elements in thin, slip cast porcelain pieces. The forms are simplified. They have clean, strong contour lines and quiet surface treatments. The surface treatment often includes script, which is handwritten by me.

I’ve always enjoyed working in porcelain, but right now it has particular significance to my work. The thin, fragile walls of my work serve three main purposes. First, they allow the pieces to become translucent and interact with light. Additionally, because of their translucence, I can achieve unusual overlapping effects with the text that decorates them. Finally, they’re a daily reminder, as I accidentally break piece after piece in my studio, that I need to take care – both of what I’m creating and of the body I inhabit.
